if you have noticed by now, i love pandas. people always ask me why and sure i’ll admit to them being cute but it goes deeper than that. Science News just released this article about the sequencing of the panda genome and it reveals some of why i love pandas. i’m probably off on this but i think of pandas as evolutionary nihilist and as some of the genome has revealed i’m not far off.

The panda genome gives clues to understanding the panda’s strict bamboo diet. It
turns out that pandas have mutations in two copies of a taste gene called T1R1, which encodes a protein that senses the savory taste of meats, cheeses, broths and other high-protein foods. These mutations may have robbed pandas of the ability to taste meat, pushing them toward their bamboo diet, the researchers suggest.

so many things make it seem so unlikely that pandas should even be alive, yet there they are, eating things they shouldn’t, mating once a year, caring for only one offspring and living in really inhospitable areas. giving nature the middle finger.

if you have not experienced this movie, YOU ARE WASTING YOUR LIFE. by far one of the best artifacts of the 80s. this is the glow by willie hutch, from the movie but edited to take out some dialog and just show the bruce lee montage from the movie. this movie has not one but two one name “stars” [taimak and vanity]. plus one of the most bad ass awesome villains ever, sho’nuff! if you’re having difficulty leaving this page to find it here is the netflix. go! now!

so here are two neat digital cameras from japan. the red and blue is the exemode SQ28m, it’s a keychain camera, 2.7mp, 320 x 240, 8fps and no audio. what makes this little guy great is that there are a bunch of filters, some of which give a great 8mm look to video that it shoots, also it takes square pictures. it costs $65 dollars if you are one of those people who can work your way through a japanese language webstore.

the sleek black number is the digital harinezumi 2 from superheadz. superheadz has an incredible line of retro cameras that i have been lusting after for quite some time. the digital harinezumi 2 is an update which now records audio with video. as with the exemode it records video with a 8mm effect and shoots like a 110. although with higher fidelity, 640 x 480 video, 1024 X 768 and 2048 x 1536 photo. it’s a bit pricier at $169 but from the product photos it looks like a slightly better built product than the exemode. you can easily acquire the harinezumi stateside from turntable lab

if you haven’t heard by now jack rose passed suddenly earlier this month. i had the chance to interview him a few years ago for the empty bottle podcast. even though it was just we spent about an hour or so chatting he was friendly, affable guy. he, along with others made the whole a great experience. just in from the “two thumbs up and more of this activity please”, dateline cleveland: gotta groove records a BRAND NEW RECORD PRESSING PLANT has just opened after their opening party on November 14th. i can’t say how stoked i am that pressing plants are opening not closing. even if this doesn’t work the fact that these guys felt the had a chance, and from what i read these aren’t just some nostalgic dreamers, this feels sooooo good. i mean you just can’t beat the sensuous tactility of vinyl.

these are the illustrations of shusei nagaoka who did a ton of covers in the 70s and 80s. if there is anything missing from the italo-disco scene is not enough covers featuring robots, spaceships and alien landscapes. i have to work on my airbrushing skills.
